Gum disease treatments

Our treatment recommendations are catered to your specific situation and what will work best for your health.

Deep cleanings
A deep cleaning (also called scaling and root planing) goes above and beyond what you get during a standard dental cleaning. We’ll remove bacterial buildup from under the gum line to reduce gum inflammation and to prevent the spread of disease.

Locally Placed Antibiotic
Gum disease is caused by bacteria. In addition to deep cleanings, we at times may recommend placing an antibiotic, such as Arestin, to help heal the gum infection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is gum disease?

Gum disease (also known as periodontal disease) is the #1 cause of preventable tooth loss in adults. This dental problem occurs when bacterial biofilm builds up along the gum line, damaging your teeth, gums, and causing you to lose jaw bone.

How can you prevent gum disease?

  • Brush your teeth and floss every day
  • Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months
  • Avoid smoking, vaping, and tobacco
  • Book a cleaning and exam at least twice a year (or as recommended by your dentist)

What are the common signs of gum disease?

  • Red, inflamed, bleeding, or swollen gums
  • Gum recession (teeth that look longer than normal)
  • Black triangles between your teeth
  • Loose or mobile teeth

How does gum disease affect your health?

Gum disease is associated with many systemic health issues, including diabetes, strokes, and heart disease, and low birth weight in pregnant women. Gum disease can also lower your body’s ability to fight off other infections. It’s even been linked to respiratory infections.
