If you have missing teeth or severely decayed teeth, a dental bone graft may be necessary to provide a strong and stable foundation for dental implants. This can not only improve the appearance of your smile but also protect the exposed roots of your teeth from further damage and decay.

Are you a candidate for a bone grafting procedure?

If you’re missing teeth or have severely decayed teeth, you may be a candidate for a bone grafting procedure. This surgical procedure involves adding bone material to the jaw to create a strong and stable foundation for dental implants.

Bone grafting is a dental procedure that may be necessary for patients who lack sufficient healthy natural bone to support dental implants.

This deficiency can be caused by a variety of factors, including:

  • Gum disease
  • Developmental abnormalities
  • Facial injury or trauma
  • Empty spaces or gaps following tooth extractions.

The best way to determine if you’re a candidate for a bone grafting procedure is to get a diagnosis from your dentist. Request an appointment at MillBridge Dentistry to evaluate your oral health and determine the best treatment options for your needs.

Our bone grafting procedure…

  1. Your dentist will conduct a thorough examination of your teeth, gums, and bone structure, to begin the implant process.
  2. If necessary, a bone graft procedure may be performed to ensure that your jaw is ready for the implant.
  3. Once the bone graft has healed, the implant will be placed into the jawbone.
  4. To finish the restoration, a custom crown, bridge, or denture will be attached to the implant.

Frequently asked questions about bone grafting

What is bone graft surgery like?

Bone grafting is a straightforward procedure that typically takes less than 90 minutes to complete.

  • Before the procedure begins, the patient will be given local anesthesia or a sedative to help them relax.
  • A small incision will be made in the gums, and the graft will be placed and secured in the desired area.
  • Once the graft is in place, stitches will be used to close the incision.

The entire procedure is designed to be as minimally invasive and comfortable as possible for the patient!

Where does the bone graft come from?

Traditionally, bone material for grafting procedures has been taken from other parts of the patient’s body. However, there are now more advanced and less invasive options available. These alternatives include synthetic materials, donated human bone, or bone from animals such as cows.

How long should you wait after bone grafting before getting an implant?

Although you may feel better within 1-2 weeks after the procedure, the grafted bone will not be fully ready to support an implant for approximately 3 to 4 months.

What is the expected recovery time?

Most patients can expect to feel fully recovered within 1-2 weeks after a bone grafting procedure. Some patients may experience discomfort or soreness in the days following the surgery, but this can typically be managed with over-the-counter pain medication. If you have any concerns about your recovery, be sure to discuss them with our dental team.
